Pachypodium lamerei plant "Joe" Pachypodium

See me on Facebook

I am Joe Pachypodium, probably the only pachypodium with his own Facebook page. My botanical name is Pachypodium lamerei and my parents were native to Madagascar. I was sprouted last January at Gish Foliage and I am now in a 4 inch pot-the perfect size to take home for your house. I am durable indoor plant. I am part of the Mary's Plant Pals family of house plants and I am the first in my family to join Facebook.

My parents were planted in Elfin Forest in 1985 by Gil and they have grown to be dramatic specimens. They began flowering and producing seeds in 1990. When grown in the ground I develop a thick trunk covered with spines. When I get old enough I have flowers like a Plumeria. Although I look like a Cactus, I am an old world succulent and I grow much faster than most cacti.

My parents flower all summer and a few of the flowers are pollinated by hand. Then around Valentines Day, the seed pods start to get bigger and form a large horn that contains the seeds. In early July these pods will start to open and the seeds are attached to a little propeller so then can float away in the wind. The pirate bugs love the pods and usually show up and hang out when they are opening. The seed picker then carefully harvest the pods and the seed is planted and will sprout within a few weeks.
